Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. As a child she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. At the age of she reached the age of fifteen, Houston was singing professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 song Im Every Woman. The singer went on to sing backing vocals for Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls and her own mother and was briefly models on the cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her singing with New York-based group Material brought attention to major record labels, including Arista. The label signed her to Arista in 1983, where she continued to work for the rest of her professional career. The year 1985 saw Whitney Houston's debut album turned out to be the best-selling debut album of all time. The album All My Love was released in 1985 and became a number one single. The album came out in 1987, and it sold over 25 million copies worldwide.
