Hitchcock presents Daniels Brenner's mother Lydia, as well as Suzanne Pleshette, who plays his ex- partner Annie, long before the action occurs. Hitchcock investigated a mysterious attack on Capitola in California in the year 1961, caused by sooty Shearwaters, which was believed to be caused by diatom poisoning from anchovies that the birds had eaten and subsequently caused an extreme level of anger.
